What happens at an Exercise Physiology Appointment?
Assessment
The first appointment is for an exercise physiology assessment.
This is a thorough check-up of your fitness and health. Here’s what you can expect:
- Health Talk: You’ll discuss your medical history, current health, lifestyle, and fitness goals with the exercise physiologist.
- Basic Measurements: We’ll take measurements like your height, weight, and body composition to get a starting point.
- Fitness Tests: We will complete a range of simple tests to gain an understanding of where you are, and what things we can work on together: (all tests are chosen to suit your specific abilities and goals)
- Aerobic fitness
- Balance
- Strength
- Flexibility
- Results Discussion: The exercise physiologist will explain your test results in simple terms.
- Personal Plan: You’ll get a tailored exercise plan based on your results to help you reach your goals safely and effectively.
This assessment gives you a clear picture of your fitness and health, helping us work together to create a plan to improve your performance, manage health conditions, or just get healthier.
Exercise Sessions
After your initial session, depending on your goals and capabilities, you may join us in our purpose built facility, in your home, or you may be doing your training at home by yourself.
Exercise sessions with us consist of:
- Check in: We will discuss any changes to your health or goals, and complete any safety assessments, such as checking your blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen or blood sugar levels.
- Warm up: This will consist of movements that help you get ready to be active, and can support mobility and function
- Exercise: Your actual exercise session will be tailored to your plan, and how you are feeling on the day, in a safe an supported environment. We use the best evidence to help you improve, whilst keeping within your abilities.
- Cool down: The goal of the cool down, is to allow your heart rate to fall naturally back to resting values. This often happens as part of your exercise session, and can consist simply of easier activities or stretching at the end of your session.
Review:
Throughout your health and exercise journey, your Exercise Physiologist will routinely complete assessments on your fitness and function, to assess how you are improving and what changes need to be made to your exercise program.
