Getting Stronger After Amputation: How Exercise Physiologists Help

Losing a limb is challenging, but with the right support, you can regain strength, confidence, and independence. Exercise physiologists are experts who create exercise programs tailored just for you to help your body recover and get moving again.

What Happens During Assessment?
First, the exercise physiologist will check your overall fitness by looking at things like your strength, balance, flexibility, and heart health. They might test how well you can walk or use your prosthetic, see how your muscles are working, and ask about any pain or challenges you’re facing.

What Does Therapy Look Like?
Based on your assessment, they’ll design a therapy plan that could include:

  • Strength exercises to build up muscles around your remaining limb and core, like leg lifts or resistance band workouts.

  • Balance and coordination activities, such as standing on one leg or using balance boards, to help prevent falls.

  • Cardiovascular workouts, like walking, cycling, or swimming, to improve heart health and stamina.

  • Functional movements that practice everyday activities, such as getting up from a chair or climbing stairs, often adapted to work with your prosthetic.

Throughout therapy, the exercise physiologist will support you, adjust exercises as you improve, and help you stay motivated. Their goal is to make sure you feel stronger, more confident, and ready to live life to the fullest.
